Podcast Nerd Alert
Your Weekly Association Podcast Boost
I have always been a podcast nerd. I started podcasting in 2007. Producing my own and then others’ podcasts back then, the main question from anyone was: “What’s a podcast?”
Now, everyone has a podcast. Well, not really — but everyone definitely has a podcast in them. Back then, you had to jump through hoops to even download a podcast. These days? One click and you're in.
I listen to a ton of podcasts. And I’m usually underwater when I do. :)
Every morning I swim for an hour using a Sony Walkman not the cassette one, but an MP3 player designed for swimming. It should be called the SonySwimMan or SwimPerson. You download the MP3 files, plug in the Walkman, and transfer them. Old school, but effective.
My little pet peeve is I hate general advertising. Especially, underwater podcast ads, because I can't skip them while swimming with my MP3 player like on my iPhone. So here’s a trick if you download episodes using Podscribe.com, you can select different countries in the download dropdown. Only the USA episodes have a million ads that breakup the conversation or story. For example, Joe Rogan’s U.S. episode might have 10 ads, but the India version has just 1. Real podcast nerdery! (Full transparency: I don’t listen to Joe Rogan)
Podcasting Insight of the Week
Today Is National Apple Pie Day
Topic: Apple Pie Podcasts
Why: I thought it’d be fun to search “Apple Pie” in Apple Podcasts. I mean it’s Apple, right? Surprisingly, most shows were either one-offs or had podfaded (podcast nerd-speak for abandoned shows). Out of 10 I found, only one had recent episodes called The Apple Pie Club and it’s not even about pie.
So, now is the time start a podcast in the Apple Pie niche. Maybe Apple Pie & Associations? Could be huge.
Apple Pie’s not your jam? Good news: It’s also National Cocktail Day!
Maybe combine the both this evening little Appletini and a slice of Apple Pie!
Quick Tool Spotlight
Tool: Podscribe.com
Why It’s Great:
Beyond the ad reduction swim trick as I mentioned, it provides full transcripts, making content more accessible for all listeners. You can also discover new podcasts and YouTube channels.
Yes, I dislike most podcast ads, but our clients’ sponsorships are the exception — they’re targeted, relevant, and valuable to niche audiences. Podscribe supports that with real-time analytics including impressions, reach, and conversions which makes it easier to prove ROI to your board or partners.
This Week’s Feature: Getting Podcast Guests
For busy association pros, every podcast guest is an opportunity to educate, engage, and elevate your voice beyond conferences and screens (unless it’s video podcast).
You might not use professional guesting platforms often, and that’s okay. You already know which industry voices your members trust. But here’s the key: if talking to a potential guest doesn’t spark genuine excitement, it’s a no.
Don’t just fill airtime serve your memembers and industry.
Industry guests move your story forward, build trust with members, and keep them listening.
Next time you're considering a guest, ask: Is this a full-body “yes”?
If not, it's a strategic pass. Your association deserves better than that.
